MBA / MSTRSM Joint Degree Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In addition to the MSTRSM and MTRSM degree programs in sport management, the department offers a joint degree program in business and sport management. Admission to the joint program requires the approval of the Graduate School of Business and the Department of Tourism, Recreation & Sport Management. In most cases, the student will make simultaneous applications to both programs. The joint degree program is not open to students who have already earned one of these degrees. Admission requirements include acceptable performance on the GMAT and GRE examinations, the entrance interview and undergraduate GPA. A student wishing to apply for the concurrent program while in his/her first semester of the TRSM program may do so with TRSM program director's approval. The MBA office must receive the application no later than November 1st of a student's first term.
Essential elements of the joint program include:

Candidates are admitted in the fall term only. The program offers two options for students with a business undergraduate degree and the other for those without the degree. Sixty-six credits are required in each option.

For the first year the student is classified as a 7HH (College of Health and Human Performance) taking TRSM courses fall term and completing an internship the second term (which may extend through summer term).

After successful completion of the first year a deferred admission into the MBA program is granted for summer or fall terms of the second year at which time the student's classification become 'CD' (concurrent degree). During the second year the student takes designated MBA courses, and in the third year MBA and TRSM courses are taken in combination.

TRSM coursework to be credited toward the MBA degree must carry a 'B' or higher grade.

A student must satisfy the curriculum requirements for both degrees before either degree is awarded.

Students who enroll in the joint program but do not complete the program may receive credit for a maximum of two courses (not to exceed 6 credits) taken from either program to be applied to the other program's degree. A grade of 'B' or higher must be earned for these credits to count.

Students in the joint program will be eligible for the graduate teaching/research assistantships in the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences on the same basis as other TRSM graduate students.

To facilitate student progress in the joint program, the student's graduate supervisory committee will be comprised of two TRSM graduate faculty members and one MBA program faculty member.
