Depending
on career goals, Therapeutic Recreation majors (and other recreation
and tourism majors) may want to consider a minor in gerontology.
The aging population has made a number of positions available
in
organizations that provide services to and formulate policy for
elders. Many graduate programs now include an emphasis on aging
for which a minor in gerontological studies would serve as a useful
background. Students planning to pursue professional degrees
will
find that an increasing number of their clients or patients will
be old. Participation in the Gerontological Studies program
will
provide students with an excellent background in working with older
populations. This background is particularly important for students
who plan to pursue careers in human services, business, law, medicine,
academics, or the sciences. For further information about a
minor
in gerontology, please contact the Center for Gerontological Studies
at www.geron.ufl.edu.
