Admission Requirements

Admission to graduate study in the department requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade average of B for all upper-division undergraduate work, and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students applying to joint degree programs in the Warrington College of Business Administration or College of Law must also post satisfactory scores on the GMAT or LSAT.


Students from countries where English is not the primary language are also required to score a minimum of 550 (213 computer-based; 80 internet version) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). International students whose native tongue is English or who have studied at a United States college or university for one year or more need not submit TOEFL scores but must submit satisfactory scores on the GRE before their applications for admission can be considered.


Applications will be accepted year round, but, those who are applying for Department Financial Assistance (Assistantships or Fellowships) must submit their applications by the following dates:

Fall Admission: Apply by February 1
Spring Admission: Apply by October 1

Late Applications may be considered.

Direct acceptance to the department is dependent upon:
GRE Score: All sections (verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing) are evaluated.
Letters of recommendation (At least two must be from academic sources, i.e. professors).
The applicant’s statement of purpose for applying to the department.
For those applying for the Ph.D., please examine the research areas of the faculty to determine which area is of the most interest to you. Once you have determined this, contact that faculty member directly to discuss the possibility of becoming his or her Ph.D. student.
Availability of a faculty advisor
Teaching, research and other department needs in cases where departmental financial supported is requested.

Admissions Procedures

Send the following materials directly to the UF Office of Admissions:
Application form (online or hardcopy version)
Application fee payment ($30 in US funds)
Official test scores (GRE for all students, + TOEFL for International Students)
Official transcripts from all previous colleges (if not in English, also send official English translations along with the originals)
Florida residency affidavit (part of the application form)
Conduct declaration (part of the application form)

Each application is reviewed by a faculty committee specializing in the applicant’s declared area of interest (based on the letter of intent). A student’s file must be complete before it is reviewed by the specialization committee.
