Undergraduate Scholarships

All college undergraduate scholarships are awarded to students who are full-time, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have been a major in the college for one year and possess junior or senior status. See scholarship description for individual award qualifications.

Allen/Holyoak/Varnes Scholarship

Three former professors of the College, Robert Allen, Owen J. Holyoak, and Paul R. Varnes have established graduate and undergraduate scholarships to be awarded annually. Drs. Allen and Varnes, graduates of the College, retired from Exercise and Sport Sciences, and Recreation, Parks and Tourism, respectively. Dr. Allen, who now resides in Vero Beach, retired from the College in 1988. Dr. Varnes served as Department Chair for 28 years prior to his retirement in 1997. Dr. Holyoak, who also retired in 1997, was the first Chair of the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology.

Allen/Holyoak/Varnes Scholarship: This award is for an undergraduate student in any college major. Applicants must be at least a junior, with 24 credit hours earned at the University of Florida and a 3.5 minimum UF GPA. Preference will be given to students with American citizenship who have made a significant contribution to society through volunteer work and/or military service.

BoydC.A. Boyd Scholarship

Dr. C.A. Boyd joined the College faculty in 1950 and became Dean in 1970. He retired as Dean Emeritus in 1986. Dean Boyd's dry New England humor and unmistakable accent were characteristics that made him unique in the Gainesville community. He was an avid golfer, and the undergraduate scholarship that bears his name includes a love of the game as one of the criteria for selection.

C.A. Boyd Undergraduate Scholarship: This award is for a student of outstanding character in any college major. The recipient should have a strong commitment to serve the profession.

Eggart

Danny Eggart Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The James Daniel Eggart Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Eggart's widow in accordance with his request. Danny Eggart was a 1965 graduate of the College. He attended UF on a baseball scholarship and was All-SEC in 1963. He went 10-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 1963, followed by a 9-4 season with a 3.37 ERA in 1964 and a 5-4 season with a 3.82 ERA in 1965. Danny ranked among the career top 10 in innings pitched (8th, 250.1), wins (6th, 24) and winning percentage (9th, .760). He finished his career as the all-time leader in both innings pitched and wins. His wish for this scholarship was to assist students from the Escambia County area to attend the University of Florida and complete a major in the College. Danny Eggart passed away in 1989.

Danny Eggart Undergraduate Scholarship: This award is limited to graduates of Florida high schools, preferably Panhandle high schools. Financial need is considered.

Charles Fessler Sr. and Miriam A. Fessler Scholarship

This scholarship is donated by the Fessler’s son and daughter-in-law (Chuck and Judy) and their grandchildren (Jimmy and Debbie) in gratitude for all of the love and support given to them throughout the years. In making this gift, the donors state that “words are inadequate to express the depth of our love and appreciation.”

Charles and Miriam Fessler have been avid supporters of both the University and the College for nearly 40 years. The depth of their commitment in life can be seen in their 58 years of marriage. For the past 20 years, the Fesslers have been active volunteers in numerous community-based organizations in Jacksonville. Their love for volunteering continues to this day.

Charles Fessler Jr. and Judith Fessler

Charles Fessler Jr. and Judith Fessler Scholarships

Charles W. Fessler Jr. received his B.S. in 1968 and his Ed.S. in 1971. He was actively involved in the intramural sports program. When asked, those who knew him as a student remember him as a person who made things happen. Creative and energetic, he barely finished one project before starting the next. For the last 31 years, Fessler has been actively officiating for high school and college sports. He is currently a teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla.

Judith D. Fessler has been married to Charles W. Fessler for 34 years. She worked in Tigert Hall for UF administration while her husband was a student. She has been active as a Girl Scout leader and adviser since 1971. She is an avid Gator fan. The Fesslers have two children, Debbie and Jimmy, and two grandchildren. Debbie is a UF graduate.

The Charles W. Fessler Jr. Scholarship was in initiated in 1994 for majors in the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management who have had active involvement in the Recreational Sports program and demonstrated professional potential.

Charles W. Fessler, Jr. Scholarship: This award is for a student of senior status in the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management.


Judith D. Fessler Scholarship: This award is for a student of senior status in the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology and who is a native of Florida. Preference given to married students.

Dr. Norma M. Leavitt Scholarship

Dr. Norma M. Leavitt was on the faculty of the College for 28 years prior to her retirement in 1981. She first came to Gainesville in 1953 to chair the Department of Required Physical Education for Women, a position she held until 1962 when she moved to the Department of Professional Curriculum. Dr. Leavitt was a master teacher who accepted nothing but the best from her students. Her goal was to create highly competent professionals.


Norma M. Leavitt Undergraduate Scholarship: This award is for any graduate student in any college major with a 3.5 UF GPA. Criteria include outstanding character with a strong commitment to serve their profession. Preference will be given to female applicants.

Thomas F. Hayes IV Memorial Scholarship

Thomas F. Hayes IV was a student in the College. A participant in the Team Florida Cycling Club, Thomas was killed while cycling through Payne's Prairie with Team Florida. His mother, Maryanne Cunningham, established this scholarship in memory of her son.

Thomas F. Hayes IV Memorial Scholarship: This award is for any college major. Special preference will be given to students who participate in the Team Florida Cycling Club.

Moore

Alan C. Moore Scholarship

Alan Moore came to the University of Florida in 1953. He obtained his B.S. from Springfield College and Master's degree from the University of North Carolina. Mr. Moore served as professor in the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology until his retirement in 1990, and in 1986 retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve with rank of Commander. Professor Moore has been honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, FAHPERD, AAHPERD, and the U.S. Coast Guard and has served his profession through leadership positions at the national, district and state levels.

Professor Moore is well known for his dedicated service as founder, faculty adviser, and coach of the University of Florida Soccer Club from 1953-1990, with a record of six undefeated seasons and 501 wins. Not only has he published in the recognized journals in his field, but also has co-authored textbooks on topics ranging from soccer to physical fitness.

Alan C. Moore Undergraduate Scholarship: This award is for any college major who shows interest in being of service to others and demonstrates leadership ability.

Partrick

Chris Patrick Scholarship Program

The Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology offers the Chris Patrick Scholarship program to honor outstanding student athletic trainers from the University of Florida's undergraduate athletic training education program. Chris Patrick, Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Health, is a member of many Halls of Fame, including the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Southeast, the state of Florida, and the University Athletic Association. He also is the former chairperson of the Southeastern Conference Sports Medicine committee.

Full in-state tuition waivers are awarded to deserving students who are majoring in the College's undergraduate athletic training education program. The Chris Patrick Scholarships are sponsored by the University Athletic Association, Inc. and are presented to encourage academic excellence within the specialization of athletic training.

University Athletic Association, Inc. oversees the scholarship selection.

Potter Chafin

Potter-Chafin Scholarship

William (Bill) Potter and Moses B. (M.B.) Chafin are former head coaches of the Gator tennis team and longtime members of the College faculty. Bill Potter retired from teaching a number of years ago; M.B. Chafin was Director of Recreational Sports and is an Associate Professor Emeritus of the College. He retired in 2000 after 36 years of service to the College. Friends, former players and students of Coach Potter and Coach Chafin established the scholarship as a way to honor these two outstanding educators.

Potter-Chafin Scholarship: This award is for any college major who enjoys and actively participates in tennis.

Frederick E. Rozelle Endowed Scholarship

Fred Rozelle is a native of Florida, and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Florida. He attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship and played for four years under Coaches "Bear" Wolf and Bob Woodruff.    Fred taught at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1954, he became head football coach and Athletics Director at St. Petersburg Senior High School. In 1963, he was appointed Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics for Pinellas County. His desire to be a school principal returned him to St. Petersburg High as assistant principal in 1963. During the winter of 1965, Fred was appointed principal of Azalea Junior High School in St. Petersburg, where he served until 1970. In 1971, he was named principal of Seminole High School. Fred was elected to the Florida High School Athletics Association Board of Directors in 1973, and in 1977, he was appointed to the Executive Committee. In 1978, he was elected Vice President, and in 1979, elected Commissioner of FHSAA, a position he held until he retired in July 1991.  Fred serves on the College of Health and Human Performance Advisory Board and Executive Committee.

Herman W. Schnell Memorial Scholarship

Herman W. Schnell was one of the original faculty members when the College was established in 1946. In 1946, Mr. Schnell became the head of the Department of Physical Education for Men, a position he held until his death in 1958.

Charles McPhilomy Scholarship

Coach Charles “Chuck” McPhilomy received his B.S. from the College of Physical Education, Health and Athletics in 1952 with help from the World War II G.I. Bill. He experienced short careers in football, baseball and cheerleading. He ran cross country in 1951, and lettered in track in 1951 and 1952. McPhilomy taught physical education and coached for 40 years, retiring from teaching in 1992. He retired from coaching in 2002, capping off a 50-year coaching career. Although his primary sports were cross-country and track, he also coached football, baseball, basketball and swimming.  McPhilomy has been married for 37 years. He and his wife have seven children and 12 grandchildren.

Charles McPhilomy Scholarship: The scholarship is for a student pursuing a professional teaching degree, with an emphasis of physical education and coaching. Preference will be given to military verterans.


Kyle Fredrik Schuemann Memorial Scholarship

Kyle Schuemann was a senior in the sport management program before he passed away in October 2003. He was an outstanding scholar with a 4.0 GPA and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. Eager for a career in athletics, Schuemann worked in the press box of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium during UF football games and had accepted an internship at the PGA.

Kyle Fredrik Schuemann Memorial Scholarship: This award is for a student in Sports Management with a minimum 3.5 UF GPA.

Dorthea A. Travis Scholarship

Larry Travis created this scholarship out of love and admiration for his wife. She has constantly supported him throughout his career. Larry Travis earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College in physical education. Dorthea and Larry Travis were married n July 15, 1961 and the couple has three children Michael, Laura, and Scott.

Peter Tharpe Scholarship

Peter Tharpe graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in health science education, specializing in school health. The following year, he received a master’s degree in public health. Peter has been an employee of Shands Hospital since 1991 and is currently the administrative director for the UF Hospitalist program.

Peter Tharpe Scholarship: : This award is for a student in Health Education and Behavior.
