Graduate Scholarships
All college graduate scholarships are awarded to students who are full-time, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and possess graduate status. See scholarship description for individual award qualifications.
Allen/Holyoak/Varnes Endowed Scholarship
Three former professors of the College, Robert Allen, Owen J. Holyoak, and Paul R. Varnes have established graduate and undergraduate scholarships to be awarded annually. Drs. Allen and Varnes, graduates of the College, retired from Exercise and Sport Sciences, and Recreation, Parks and Tourism, respectively. Dr. Allen, who now resides in Vero Beach, retired from the College in 1988. Dr. Varnes served as Department Chair for 28 years prior to his retirement in 1997. Dr. Holyoak, who also retired in 1997, was the first Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences.
This award is for any graduate student in any college major. Preference will be given to students with American citizenship who have made a significant contribution to society through volunteer work and/or military service.

C.A. Boyd Endowed Scholarship
Dr. C.A. Boyd joined the College faculty in 1950 and became Dean in 1970. He retired as Dean Emeritus in 1986. Dean Boyd's dry New England humor and unmistakable accent were characteristics that made him unique in the Gainesville community. He was an avid golfer, and the undergraduate scholarship that bears his name includes a love of the game as one of the criteria for selection.
C.A. Boyd Graduate Scholarship: This award is for a full-time graduate student with a 3.4 or higher GPA. The recipient should be of outstanding character with a strong commitment to serve the profession.
Danny Eggart Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The James Daniel Eggart Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Eggart's widow in accordance with his request. Danny Eggart was a 1965 graduate of the College. He attended UF on a baseball scholarship and was All-SEC in 1963. He went 10-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 1963, followed by a 9-4 season with a 3.37 ERA in 1964 and a 5-4 season with a 3.82 ERA in 1965. Danny ranked among the career top 10 in innings pitched (8th, 250.1), wins (6th, 24) and winning percentage (9th, .760). He finished his career as the all-time leader in both innings pitched and wins. Danny Eggart passed away in 1989.
Danny Eggart Graduate Scholarship: This award is limited to graduates from Florida high schools, preferably high schools in the Panhandle area.
Thomas F. Hayes IV Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Thomas F. Hayes IV was a student in the College. A participant in the Team Florida Cycling Club, Thomas was killed while cycling through Payne's Prairie with Team Florida. His mother, Maryanne Cunningham, established this scholarship in memory of her son.
Thomas F. Hayes IV Memorial Graduate Scholarship: This award is for any graduate student in any college major. Special preference will be given to students who participate in the Team Florida Cycling Club.
Dr. Norma M. Leavitt Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Norma M. Leavitt was on the faculty of the College for 28 years prior to her retirement in 1981. She first came to Gainesville in 1953 to chair the Department of Required Physical Education for Women, a position she held until 1962 when she moved to the Department of Professional Curriculum. Dr. Leavitt was a master teacher who accepted nothing but the best from her students. Her goal was to create highly competent professionals.
Norma M. Leavitt Graduate Scholarship: This award is for any graduate student in any college major. Criteria includes outstanding character with a strong commitment to serve their profession. Preference will be given to female applicants.
Lee-McCachren Endowed Scholarship
The Lee-McCachren Scholarship was established as a tribute to two outstanding teachers, P.A. Lee and Jim McCachren. The handball/racquetball courts, once on University Avenue, were named the Lee-McCachren Courts in their honor.
Lee-McCachren Graduate Scholarship: This award is for a full-time Applied Physiology & Kinesiology graduate student serving as a graduate assistant and maintaining a 3.4 or higher GPA. The recipient must be of outstanding character with a strong, competitive spirit, and a high level of enthusiasm for life and professional pursuits.
David & Linda McCaughey Endowed Scholarship
The McCaughey's daughter, Molly Foley donated this scholarship to the College of Health and Human Performance in remembrance and appreciation of the beautiful lessons learned from her parents.
"In memory of my father, David, an avid athlete and sports fan who taught my brother and me how to compete, not only in sports, but also in the game of life. And to my mother, Linda, who taught us how to enjoy life, to be true to ourselves, and to love without boundaries. Expressions of gratitude could never convey the amount of love and support we received from them."
The David and Linda McCaughey Endowed Scholarship: This award is for a graduate student in the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology.
The McGriff Family Endowed Scholarship
Perry McGriff attended UF on a football scholarship and graduated from physical education and recreation in 1960. He was an All-American baseball player at UF. He has served on the Florida House of Representatives, as Alachua County Commissioner and as Gainesville City Commissioner. Perry and Noel McGriff have been married for more than 45 years.
Perry’s son, Mark, was a UF football player and graduated in 1991 with a degree in exercise and sport sciences. Mark is a board member of the Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee and is involved with the Five Points of Life Marathon in Gainesville.
The McGriff Family Endowed Scholarship: This award is for a graduate student in the Sport Management.
Potter-Chafin Endowed Scholarship
William (Bill) Potter and Moses B. (M.B.) Chafin are former head coaches of the Gator tennis team and longtime members of the College faculty. Bill Potter retired from teaching a number of years ago; M.B. Chafin was Director of Recreational Sports and is an Associate Professor Emeritus of the College. He retired in 2000 after 36 years of service to the College. Friends, former players and students of Coach Potter and Coach Chafin established the scholarship as a way to honor these two outstanding educators.
Potter-Chafin Graduate Scholarship: This award is for any graduate student in any college major with outstanding character and a strong commitment to serve their profession.
Herman W. Schnell Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Herman W. Schnell was one of the original faculty members when the College was established in 1946. In 1946, Mr. Schnell became the head of the Department of Physical Education for Men, a position he held until his death in 1958.
Herman W. Schnell Memorial Graduate Scholarship: This award is for any graduate student in any college major who has demonstrated a high level of scholarship. Criteria includes outstanding character and a strong commitment to serve their profession.
Health Solutions Endowed Scholarship
Brothers Bill and Kevin Clair both graduated with their master’s degree from the College in 1984. Bill founded Health Solutions in 1991 and Kevin joined the company in 1993. Throughout their many years as professionals, the Clairs continued to value the instruction received at the University and wished to give back to the College by developing a scholarship to aid others in their quest for a quality education.
Health Solutions Endowed Scholarship: This award is for a doctoral student in Health Education and Behavior.
B.K. & Betty Stevens Endowed Scholarship
The late B.K. Stevens was a member of the original faculty when the College was established in 1946, and was a faculty member in the Professional Curriculum until he retired in 1976. B.K. Stevens passed away in May 2003. His wife Betty, former UF Dean of Women, maintains a strong interest in the College and continues to find ways to support students and to enable them to obtain their degrees.
B.K. and Betty C. Stevens Graduate Scholarship: This award is for an Applied Physiology & Kinesiology graduate student who shows interest in being of service to others and demonstrates successful scholarship.
Naomi S. Stevens Memorial Scholarship
Naomi Stevens was the first wife of B.K. Stevens. She was a former director of guidance at Gainesville High School. Naomi Sevens passed away in 1964.

M.M. Tutton Sr. Endowed Scholarship
A native of Rome, GA., MM (matt) Tutton Sr. was a chiropractic physician in practice for more than 30 years in Leesburg, FL. After attending Southern Adventist College in Collegedale, TN., and serving the Air Force during World War II, M.M. attended National Chiropractic College in Hinsdale, IL., graduating in 1948. The M.M. Tutton Sr Endowed Scholarship was established by Drs. Jill and Paul Varnes, both graduates and long time faculty members of the College and Health and Human performance, in memory of Jill’s father, Dr. Matt Tutton Sr. (1921-1982).
