This area of study is designed for students pursuing knowledge regarding physical activity for individuals with disabilities. Course work in adapted physical activity highlights research issues as they apply to understanding principles of adapting physical activities in educational, sport, and clinical settings. This emphasis is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in adapted physical activity or for occupations as consultants/direct service providers in school, community-based sport, or clinical settings.
The Special PE component of this program
is designed for students who are already certified to teach physical
education, special education, or elementary education. Those certified to
teach in physical education can earn the Adapted Physical Education National
Standards (APENS) Certified Adapted Physical Education (CAPE) credential.
The Exercise Therapy component is designed for students interested in
working with special populations throughout the lifespan in rehabilitation
settings and the like.
Practical Experience Sites and Clinical Hours
This program offers many sites where students can experience working with a wide range of populations with disabilities. Volunteers are always needed in organizations, schools, and programs involved with special populations.
