  Director's Report

Research in the Center for Exercise Science (CES) at the University of Florida is focused upon proving the quality of life and reducing the risk of disease for people of all ages. Indeed, scientists in the CES are dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of aging and improving our understanding of the interaction between regular physical exercise and nutrition in maintaining good health.

The center continues to achieve great success in both scientific scholarship and the procurement of extramural funding. For example, over the past several years, CES faculty have annually delivered more than 60 research presentations at national and international scientific meetings and published more than 70 research articles per year in peer-reviewed journals. Further, CES faculty are currently principal or co-investigators on more than 50 research grants totaling more than $2.5 million annually. Collectively, these scientific successes rank the CES as one of the premier exercise science research centers in the world.

Another measure of the center’s success is source of its extramural research funding. CES researchers have been successful in competing for highly competitive, peer reviewed grants from numerous prestigious funding agencies. For example, CES researchers are currently principal investigators on grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Florida Biomedical Research Program. These projects will benefit the state of Florida and society in general by providing important new scientific information that can be used to prevent and treat health-related problems such as cardiovascular disease, age-related muscle loss, muscular-skeletal injury and multiple sclerosis.
In this web site we introduce you to the CES faculty and their research interests and provide a brief overview of the graduate degree programs provided by the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida.
The dedicated scientists associated with the CES strongly believe that world-class research in exercise science can dramatically improve the quality of life of people and reduce the incidence of many life-threatening diseases.
