Email Attachment Policy

What we're blocking

In order to restrict the spread of virus-carrying email messages, we block email attachments with certain file extensions. In particular, we block any executable filetype. Our filter only affects inbound messages - anything you send from your HHP account is not affected by these restrictions.

In January of 2004 we began blocking inbound ZIP files in responce to the MyDoom virus. A new variant of MyDoom has come out every couple of weeks since then, so we expect to continue this block for the forseeable future.

Bypassing the block

When a person attempts to send an attachment with one of the restricted extensions the entire message is returned. If it is executable, a note is attached indicating that the attachment is unsafe and not allowed. If it is a ZIP file, then a note is attached explaining that we do not accept ZIP files and instructing the user to change the file extension to something else (".safe", for example) and re-send the message.
